Synopsis
This wonderful story is set on an island in the South Pacific during World War
II. Most of the characters are either in the Navy or the Naval Corps of Nurses,
the war is much less important to the play than the various fluctuations in
the love lives of the main characters.
Comic relief in this boisterous and good-humoured play comes from song-and-dance
and hit numbers that you are sure to recognise. Such as "Nothing like
a Dame", "Some Enchanted Evening", "I'm Gonna Wash that
Man Right out of My Hair," and " the ceremonial dance on Bali Ha'l,

cast you away with us to this island paradise.
The setting is during World War II on an American Navel base situated on a tropical
island in the South Pacific. The story begins around the love affair between
Nellie Forbush a Navy Nurse and the middle aged French planter - Emile de Becque.
The romance continues when Lieutenant Joseph Cable is smitten by the beautiful
native girl Liat.
The Opening scene is based at Emile’s home where Nellie is phased by what
she see’s - including Emile. Romance is in the air however, at the close
of “Some Enchanted Evening” Nellie has doughts over the differences
in age between them. Nellie departs promising she will think about a future with
Emile- little does she know Emile has two children by a Polynesian woman who
has sadly passed away.
The show moves swiftly to “The Company Street” were Bloody Mary is
making the most out of the American “visitors” selling souvenirs.
Even wheeler-dealer Luther Bills is out done! During “Nothing Like a Dame” the
Marines get a close up view of the “Dames”.
The Commanding officers see Bloody Mary as a distraction and demand she leaves.
However, with the arrival of Lt. Cable she see’s a great opportunity ahead!
She entices Lt. Cable to Bali Ha’I and introduces him to Liat, a native
girl he falls in love with.
The “Thanksgiving Follies Performance” sees Nellie and the nurses
putting on a show for the Marines and Seabees, while during “Happy Talk” Bloody
Mary tries to bring Lt. Cable and Liat closer together. The comedy continues
during “Honey Bun” were we find Luther Bills not in his usual etrier.
A change of heart sees Emile agreeing to go to Marie Louise Island with Lt. Cable.
From the radio shack updates of the operation are being relayed back to the commanding
officers. There are tense times ahead as communication from the island is broken,
and Nellie is left wondering what will become of her Frenchman.
Operation Alligator gets underway, Marines, Seabees and Nurses prepare to depart
the island as Cmdr. Harbison and Cpt. Brackett finally get their ship!
The final scene sees Nellie with Emile’s children on the terrace of his
house wondering if Emile will return.
Chairman’s address
On behalf of the Bournville Musical Theatre Company I am delighted to welcome
you to our production of “South Pacific”, a show that opened on Broadway
in April 1949. This fast paced, comical show contains the magical music and lyrics
by Rogers and Hammerstein.
I would like to thank the cast and production team who have given up
so much of their valuable time for rehearsals to ensure tonight’s
production is enjoyed by all.
We are also grateful to you, our patrons and sponsors for your continued
support.. We always look forward to finally perform in front of you,
our audience, and hear the laughter and applause for this tremendous
show.
This year we have attracted over 10 new members into the Company- some
on stage for the first time! We hope they will also enjoy the production.
As the curtain rises, please sit back and enjoy some of the greatest
show numbers of all time. Including “ Nothing like a Dame” Gonna
wash that man” and of course the enchanting “Bali Ha’I”
